Aesop Lucent Facial Refiner

Illuminating the benefits that a face mask may bring to the skin, Lucent Facial Refiner is Aesop’s first formulation to include both a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) alongside a polyhydroxy acid (PHA), combined with a suite of essential oils and vitamins. A rinse-off exfoliating mask that simultaneously refines and replenishes, Lucent Facial Refiner results in skin with a more even texture and appearance—delivered via a distinctly sensorial experience.
For luminous, replenished skin
As with every skin care formulation housed in Aesop’s signature amber glass bottles and jars, Lucent Facial Refiner is the result of inquisitive explorations and experimentation by the scientists at the brand’s in-house laboratory in Melbourne. First conceived over six years ago, this unique exfoliating mask blends Aesop’s dedication to innovation with the principles which have guided the creation of its products since inception.
‘From the outset we knew that we wanted to explore the use of a gentle exfoliant like PHA—which is the first time we have used this kind of ingredient—yet in the context of our distinctly sensorial approach to skin care which balances both pleasure and performance’ says Aesop’s Director of R&D, Samy Hamada. ‘The formulation had to offer the customer not just exfoliation, but replenishment; not just a supportive range of vitamins, but essential oils that elevate the experience of caring for the skin.’ The exfoliating benefits of the face mask are conferred by a combination of BHA Salicylic Acid and PHA Gluconolactone, which together slough away dead skin cells and refine the skin’s texture, leaving it smooth and balanced. This mask is ideal for those seeking an alternative to formulations relying on physical exfoliants, such as Purifying Facial Exfoliant Paste. In tandem with this gentle exfoliation, Provitamin B5 (Panthenol), Vitamin E (Tocopherol) and Vitamin F (Linoleic Acid) nourish the skin, with a considered combination of humectant and emollient ingredients bestowing further hydration. This duality of the formulation—its ability to both refine and replenish—makes it particularly suitable for dry or dull skin.
Essential oils of Frankincense, Sandalwood and Rose Petal were selected for their renowned soothing and hydrating properties and confer a comforting warm, floral, woody aroma. Left on the skin for 15 minutes, the mask’s gel-cream texture provides a richly tactile experience, inviting a moment of respite in which one may enjoy suitably refined pursuits such as listening to an Aesop playlist or perusing a favoured poetry collection.
Two formulations for illumination
In 2016, Lucent Facial Concentrate was introduced to Aesop’s shelves, soon becoming one of its most prized skin care formulations among customers—and consultants. A lightweight hydrating serum formulated to brighten and replenish, and enhanced with Vitamin C and Niacinamide, its name—Lucent—poetically whispered its intents for the skin. Lucent Facial Refiner now extends the Lucent family, and in so doing, amplifies the results. When used in partnership, these products are demonstrated to leave the skin more luminous, smoother and with a more even appearance. Over time, this duo can help to effectively address the signs of hyperpigmentation.
Lucent Facial Refiner is best used twice a week, while Lucent Facial Concentrate may be applied daily. For the days where the two rendezvous, begin with the face mask, applying a generous layer across freshly cleansed skin. For optimum benefits, leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse off with warm water, followed by a generous splash of toner. Next, massage half a teaspoon of Lucent Facial Concentrate into the skin. For colder climates, or those requiring further hydration, this versatile serum may be layered with a richer moisturiser.
