Geranium Leaf Body Care
Perennially popular in bathrooms across the world, Aesop’s Geranium Leaf Body Care range grew from a keen interest—some might say ‘an obsession’—with the essential oil extracted from the foliage of Pelargonium graveolens (Rose Geranium). Now, 27 years since the collection first sprouted, Aesop celebrates the refreshing, vivifying aroma of this oil and the formulations it inspired, with verdant installations growing across store windows and a limited-release gift set.
The germination of Geranium
Chief Customer Officer Suzanne Santos explains the impact this range had—and continues to have—on how we bathe today: ‘Geranium Leaf was a foundational product for Aesop—and the world—asserting our founder’s desire to bring something truly extraordinary to the banality of daily bathing, at a time when the entire world was washing with bar soap, and gel-based cleansers barely existed. And so, a radical body cleanser was created—a formulation that was defined by what was omitted from the bottle, as much as what was present—during a period when fledgling products were filled with artificial colours and aromas. Everything housed in our amber glass was there because it had a reason to be, every element chosen to speak to the skin and spirit in a universal language that would create a lasting impression across genders, geographies and, indeed, generations. Essential oils blended with mastery and generosity were central to this, resulting in a formulation that transformed the act of bathing. With this body cleanser, Aesop transformed the bathrooms of the world.’
Rooted in pleasure—and purpose
Botanicals have always played a central role in the development of Aesop’s formulations, which are renowned for the evocative aromas that arise from the essential oils used in their production. However, the fascination with these ingredients stems from their efficacy rather than the olfactory pleasure they provide—that they should please the senses is but an incidental advantage.
This is particularly true of the Geranium Leaf Body Care range. Aesop’s scientists in Melbourne were not just drawn to the vivifying aroma of Rose Geranium, but even more so to its renowned cleansing and soothing properties for the skin. Such choices underline Aesop’s essentialist nature: going back to fundamentals—in this case, of body care—every ingredient must have a clear purpose. Of course, the nose cannot be ignored. And so the team combined essential oils of Geranium Leaf with Bergamot Rind and Mandarin Rind to create something unique: green, citrus and invigorating. Since the launch of Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser in 1998, the range has grown to also include a Body Balm, Body Scrub and oil-based Body Treatment—all texturally distinct and delivering different benefits to the skin.
A celebration in green
In a chromatic and thematic nod to Geranium Leaf Body Care, Aesop’s store windows will come alive with an abundance of geranium plants and scientific apparatus, evoking the fine balance of science and nature that goes into each formulation. A limited-edition gift set will also be available, titled ‘Evergreen exhilaration’, which includes Geranium Leaf Body Scrub to exfoliate and Geranium Leaf Body Balm to replenish, from neck to toe.

In detail: the Geranium Leaf Body Care range
While the range has evergreen appeal across every month of the year, the below formulations may be particularly welcome as the mercury soars. Whether scrubbing and cleansing away the effects of humid climes and heated commutes, or replenishing summer skin with the balm and body treatment, the sprightly notes of Geranium Leaf Body Care bring a sunny verdancy to the bathroom.
Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser
A low-foaming gel to gently and thoroughly cleanse without drying the skin. Formulated for frequent use, Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser lifts surface grime and leaves the skin feeling clean and refreshed.
Massage liberally onto damp skin while showering, then rinse thoroughly. Follow with generous application of Geranium Leaf Body Balm to nourish and moisturise.
Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser is packaged in a 100mL flip-top and a 500mL pump bottle—a screw cap variant of the larger format is available, allowing customers to reuse the pump from any empty Aesop 500mL bottle.

Geranium Leaf Body Balm
Thanks to a suite of emollient, skin-softening botanicals, including Shea Butter and Sweet Almond, Geranium Leaf Body Balm is particularly efficacious in alleviating seasonal dryness caused by artificially heated or cooled environments. It is suited to a wide range of skin types.
For best results, massage generously onto freshly cleansed skin, concentrating on dry areas such as elbows, knees and feet. Preface with liberal use of Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser or Geranium Leaf Body Scrub under the showerhead. For increased nourishment, blend with a few drops of Geranium Leaf Hydrating Body Treatment.
Geranium Leaf Body Balm is packaged in a 100mL aluminium tube and a 500mL pump bottle.

Geranium Leaf Body Scrub
A neck-to-toe exfoliator containing a precise blend of Pumice and Bamboo Stem to slough away dead cells and polish the skin. This efficacious formulation cleanses and exfoliates thoroughly, revealing softened skin perfectly prepared for hydration.
Twice a week, dispense into the palms or a loofah and massage onto soaked skin from the shoulders down. Focus on dry areas such as elbows, knees and feet, then rinse thoroughly. After towelling dry, follow with generous application Geranium Leaf Body Balm—optionally boosted with a few drops of Geranium Leaf Hydrating Body Treatment for intensified nourishment.

Geranium Leaf Hydrating Body Treatment
A concentrated oil blend for dry and dehydrated skin, Geranium Leaf Hydrating Body Treatment offers nurturing replenishment from neck to toe. A combination of nourishing, hydrating and softening botanical oils make it is especially beneficial through the cooler months, when crisp weather can torment the skin, leaving it dry and rough. It will also enhance any massage—by the clumsiest practitioner—with an added touch of sensorial frisson.
For best results, pour a teaspoon into the hands and massage over freshly cleansed and towel-dried skin. For boosted hydration, blend with Geranium Leaf Body Balm. Application is best prefaced with twice-weekly use of Geranium Leaf Body Scrub.
